Neonatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Brain Injury: Apoptotic and Non- Apoptotic Cell Death
نویسندگان
چکیده
The neuronal cell death associated with perinatal asphyxia, or hypoxicischemic (HI) brain injury, plays an important role in neonatal mortality and neurodevelopment retardation. The types of cell death associated with HI in the brain have been classified as being either apoptotic or necrotic. Here we describe the recent discoveries of multiple non-apoptotic cell death pathways: necroptosis; ferroptosis; and autosis (autophagy). These new cell death pathways expand our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the cell death associated with perinatal asphyxia. By targeting specific regulators of these pathways, new therapies may be developed that could protect the neonatal brain from the HI mediated injury. Vitexin protects against hypoxic-ischemic injury via inhibiting Ca2+/Calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II and apoptosis signaling in the neonatal mouse brain
Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic is a major cause of death and disability in neonates. In this study, we suggest for the first time that pretreatment with vitexin may suppress a pro-apoptotic signaling pathway in hypoxic-ischemic neuronal injury in neonates by inhibition of the phosphorylation of Ca2+/Calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II. Here we found that vitexin pretreatment reduced brain infarct...
متن کاملApoptosis has a prolonged role in the neurodegeneration after hypoxic ischemia in the newborn rat.
Birth asphyxia can cause moderate to severe brain injury. It is unclear to what degree apoptotic or necrotic mechanisms of cell death account for damage after neonatal hypoxia-ischemia (HI). In a 7-d-old rat HI model, we determined the contributions of apoptosis and necrosis to neuronal injury in adjacent Nissl-stained, hematoxylin and eosin-stained, and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-me...
متن کاملNeuroprotective effect of erythropoietin on hypoxic-ischemic brain injury in neonatal rats.
Erythropoietin (Epo) prevents ischemia and hypoxia-induced neuronal death in vitro. Recent studies have shown that this cytokine also has in vivo neuroprotective effects in cerebral and spinal ischemia in adult rodents. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of systemically administered recombinant human Epo on infarct volume and apoptotic neuronal death in a newborn rat hypoxic-isch...

Brain injuries that caused by strokes (result of intra partum ischemia) are a frequent cause of prenatal mortality and morbidity with limited therapeutic options. Transplanting human mesenchymal stem cells (hmscs) indicates improvement in hypoxic Ischemic brain injury (HIBD) by secretion growth factor stimulating repair processes (Hmscs) known as multi potent cells which isolated from bone marr...
متن کاملMechanisms Underlying Neonatal Hypoxia Ischemia
Neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a common health problem and occurs in approximately 16 in 1000 term infants every year. After the initial hypoxic ischemic insult, brain injury evolves for days and possibly even weeks. The severity of the injury depends on the gestational age and duration of the insult. The exact underlying mechanisms of neonatal HIE remain undefined and many d...
